PRNDL Gear System
Most automatic vehicles contain what's known as a PRNDL gear system. This system includes Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive gears and Low gears (on some vehicles). The letters usually appear on the shifter itself, so you can easily see which gear you're in. The purpose of each gear is pretty self-explanatory:
- Park keeps the car stationary, whether on an incline or not.
- The reverse does the opposite of Drive; it helps you back up.
- Neutral is used when you're stopped and want to take your foot off the gas pedal.
- Drive is what you use when you're ready to go!
Some automatic vehicles also have Low gears, generally used for towing or going up steep hills. These can be engaged by shifting the shifter into the "L" position.
Automatic Car Gears And Their Use
Gear P: Park
This position locks the transmission and prevents the drive wheels from turning. The parking brake should always be engaged when the vehicle is parked.
Gear R: Reverse
